Meet a Craftsman of Charcoal for Tea ceremony

Do you know people use a special charcoal for making hot water at Japanese tea ceremony?

Well. it's called "Sado Sumi", means tea ceremony charcoal, and they are made here in Uchiko town as well.

Meet a tea ceremony charcoal maker at his kiln and learn about how he makes charcoals and how it affects to life in mountain of Ishidatami district.

After the kiln visit, move to Yuge shrine, the symbol of Ishidatami district. It was reportedly built in the Muromachi era (1336–1573). In front of the shrine, There is a big pond in front and a beautiful bridge with a roof invites you to the shrine.

Then move again to Seiryu-en Park to have relax time with some coffee and local made bread toasted by charcoal. You get to see the charcoal on fire and enjoy chatting with the charcoal maker. The park has old style water wheels and beautiful creek, is surrounded by mountains.

You would feel the “Deep Japan” and fall in love in the beauty of Ishidatami nature.

After visiting a charcoal kiln, go on to the coffee break at Sei-ryu-en park, a little oasis of Ishidatami district.

Toast some piece of local made bread by local charcoal.
The baker also lives in Ishidatami. She kneads dough with domestic organic wheat and homemade yeast, and uses the wood near by that she takes care as fuel. She and her husband made the original kiln to bake bread by themself. Now she sell her bread online and there are many fans of her bread.

And also the coffee beans are roasted by a local coffee maker.
Take time and just be there. Making a cup of coffee will be a precious moment in the nature.

Enjoy local made bread and coffee while chatting with the charcoal maker.

Charcoal kiln for tea ceremony

Visit a charcoal kiln at Ishidatami district, the north-west side of Uchiko town.

Mr. Yamada makes charcoals for Japanese tea ceremony. He will show you the kiln and tell you how to make charcoals, how it related to the life in the mountain village.

Yuge shrine

Yuge shrine

Yuge shrine was reportedly built in the Muromachi era (1336–1573). The covered bridge across a pond serves as approach to the shrine. The parishioners still continue the local "Himairi-shinko" custom of praying every day alternatively for good harvest.
