A breathtaking spectacle unfolds in the skies above Uchiko as around 500 giant kites soar high into the air—an unforgettable sight that has captivated visitors for generations.
With a history spanning over 400 years, the Ikazaki Kite Battle Festival is the largest traditional event in Uchiko Town. Held annually on May 5 along the Oda River, the festival features an exhilarating kite battle, with multiple local teams flying their kites from both sides of the river. Each kite is equipped with a razor-sharp blade known as a "gagari", used to cut the strings of opposing kites in a thrilling aerial battle.
Beyond its dramatic atmosphere, the festival is deeply rooted in local tradition. It is said to have originated as a way to celebrate the birth of children, with families flying large “success kites” bearing their child’s name and wishes for healthy growth and a bright future. This custom continues today as part of the Boys’ Day celebrations.
The kites themselves are crafted using traditional techniques, combining locally sourced Iyo bamboo and handmade Ozu washi paper—both important cultural crafts of the region. These materials, along with the skills passed down through generations, reflect the rich heritage of Uchiko.
Recognized as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Ehime Prefecture, the festival is not only a dynamic spectacle but also a celebration of community, craftsmanship, and history.
