Where watermills stand along the river, good old Japan is still alive

Until around 1955 still as many as 30 water wheels were turning in the Fumoto River.In order to restore the nostalgic landscape people of the region reproduced some water mills for the "Ishidatami Seiryu-en Park".So far three mills have been installed, to make the good old landscape of Japan complete.The nostalgic scenes of flowing water turning the rumbling watermills are unforgettable.You can go into the watermill-hut, and see how rice is polished with water wheel power the traditional way.The green park has promenades as well as a place to rest.

Meet a Craftsman of Charcoal for Tea ceremony
A guided tour to learn about charcoal for Japanese tea ceremony at Ishidadami district, a beautiful Satoyama in eastern Uchiko.

Meet a charcoal maker at his kiln and learn about how he makes charcoals and how it affects to life in mountains.

Then, visit Yuge shrine, the symbol of Ishidatami district. In front of the shrine, there is a big pond and beautiful bridge with roof.

Move to Seiryu-en Park to have relax time with some coffee and local made bread toasted by charcoal. You get to see the charcoal on fire and enjoy chatting with the charcoal maker. The park has old style water wheels and beautiful creek, is surrounded by mountains.

You would feel the “Deep Japan” and fall in love in the beauty of Ishidatami nature.
