Celebrate Summer Like a Local

Summer is one of the most vibrant seasons to visit Japan. Across the country, communities gather to celebrate matsuri—traditional festivals that fill the evening air with the sound of taiko drums, the glow of lanterns, the aroma of freshly prepared street food, and dazzling fireworks.

In Uchiko, these festivals offer visitors the chance to experience the warmth of a rural community while enjoying traditions that have been passed down through generations. From colorful bamboo decorations to spectacular fireworks and local rituals, each event showcases a different aspect of summer in the Japanese countryside.

If you are planning to visit Japan in August, we invite you to discover Uchiko's summer festivals and experience this special season with us.

Uchiko Sasa Matsuri (Bamboo Festival)

Thursday, August 6 & Friday August 7

The historic Honmachi Shopping Street is beautifully decorated with around 35 colorful bamboo displays and lanterns stretching for approximately 500 meters. Visitors can also enjoy the popular Umbrella Sky installation, write wishes on colorful tanzaku paper strips, and explore game corners and other family-friendly attractions throughout the festival.

On August 6, highlights include the Bamboo Decoration Contest and a performance by the Uchiko Elementary School Trumpet and Drum Band.

On August 7, the festival culminates in the lively Sasa Dance Competition, where local groups perform traditional dances through the decorated streets.

Ikazaki Fireworks Festival

Thursday, August 13 | Fireworks from 8:00 PM

One of the highlights of Uchiko's summer, the Ikazaki Fireworks Festival features approximately 1,500 fireworks launched over the Oda River. Thanks to the riverside setting, spectators can enjoy the display from remarkably close range, creating an exciting and immersive experience.

Teramura Fire Festival

Saturday, August 15 | From around 6:30 PM

Dating back to 1823, the Teramura Mountain Fire Festival is one of Uchiko's most unique summer traditions. As night falls, around 1,000 lights, known locally as Ohikari, illuminate the mountainside to form the glowing characters "Yama no Kami" (Mountain Deity). The festival is held to pray for the blessings of the mountains and a plentiful autumn harvest.

The evening also features food stalls, live music, taiko drum performances, and a fireworks display from around 8:00 PM, creating a memorable celebration in the mountain village of Teramura.

Venue: Teramura Shopping Street and surrounding area
